Band Administration

Vision: We work alongside our partners, the members of Wahgoshig First Nation, to unify all aspects of the Band Administration under a common goal, leading the way in the development and achievement of the community's vision for seven generations.

The role of the Band Administration is to ensure that the Wahgoshig First Nation government is an effective organization that delivers high quality programs and services to its members. The Band Administration is comprised of those departments and positions required to ensure that all operations of the Band are conducted in a transparent and efficient way. The Executive Director is responsible for all Band operations and reports to the Chief and Council.

A well-run Band Administration is the community’s partner in achieving lasting success: a self-sufficient, safe, and healthy community. The community gives the Chief and Council direction and feedback; the Chief and Council deliver that mandate to the Executive Director as a strategic vision; and the Executive Director brings the staff together to coordinate the delivery of that vision.

The Band Administration has made progress over the past year, although there is still much work to be done.

In May 2017, Council appointed a new Executive Director. Since that time, we have worked together to organize ourselves around the common vision of serving the community. We have introduced annual work plans; key performance indicators; measuring and reporting; budgeting; and accountability. We have completed a Wahgoshig First Nation annual budget, the first of its kind in many years, and finished our 2016-17 Audited Financial Statements in a timely fashion.

We have also made some changes to the organizational structure to improve processes within the Band Administration, and are working to continually improve on efficiency, accountability, transparency, and communication.

Over the next year we intend to focus on team building within the Band Administration. We would like to see more community planning and all departments acting to make those plans become reality.

We recognize the need to standardize processes within the Band Administration, and to develop and train staff on policies and procedures. We also intend to:

  • Develop a 5-year financial plan
  • Complete our audit 90 days after the year end
  • Complete the 2017-18 budget before the end of this fiscal year
  • Assemble a Tangible Capital Assets Registry (a detailed list of Wahgoshig’s assets), and
  • Implement monthly reporting and measuring.
